Most important elements will get clear after reading the tips I have prepared for you.
But first, let’s refresh some basics if you are a newbie.
What is on-page and off-page SEO?
There are two kinds of SEO approaches-
- On-page SEO
- Off-page SEO
The difference between on-page and off-page SEO is pretty simple.
On-page involves all the SEO efforts you make on your website.
And off-page SEO is related to external efforts such as link building, authority, social reputation, promotion, content marketing and more.
What are the different types of SEO on-page optimization?
This is how Moz explains on-page SEO factors.
Using this, different types of optimizations can include:
- Meta title
- Meta description
- Site design
- Page speed
According to an article by Dr. Peter J. Meyers, the most important on-page SEO elements depend on site niche and site age.
No matter how you divide your SEO efforts. Each page has to be optimized.
But wait! It is also possible to over-optimize a page. Which is why you need accurate SEO techniques to work with.
Let’s discuss how to improve on-page SEO on your website!
On-page SEO tips for title writing
1. Merge your target keyword with a longtail
You need a unique and compelling title to attract clicks on search results.
Each word on your title matters in terms of on-page SEO techniques. You can’t put words that have no search potential.
Placing your target keyword, in the beginning, is a great move.
But, you can further enhance the search value by incorporating a long-tail along with your target keyword.
For example- See how I merge my target keyword and longtail keyword phrase:
With this trick, not only I get traffic for my target keyword “YouTube SEO”, but also attract traffic for the longtail search term “How to make your channel go viral”.
2. Use SERP dominating adjectives
Evaluate targeted SERP to find dominating adjectives such as “best”, “tutorial”, “top”, “actionable”, “guide”.
This is a great trick to get your content ranked in top positions.
You can search your target keyword on Google.
Then, you can try and find adjectives commonly used in the top 10 results.
Generally, these terms can be:
You can use these terms in your title to make it more searchable
3. Give an H1 tag to your title
By putting your page title in H1 tag, you make things simple for Google.
Google bots use your H1 title to understand the page summary and present in search results.
So, don’t forget to do it!
On-page SEO tips for content writing
1. Pick multiple variations of your target keyword
Instead of over-optimizing with one target keyword, you should incorporate multiple keyword variations.
To do this successfully, you first need to understand the user intent of your target keyword.
Then, you can research keyword phrases that align with similar user intent.
You can find a variety of LSIs or Latent Semantic Indexing terms this way-
Then, you can check the whole list to find relevant LSIs to target on your page.
2. Insert your target keyword subtly in the beginning
The first 100 words should have a single occurrence of your target keyword for sure.
You can also include your longtail phrase within 150 words of the introduction.
Just make sure you do this organically. Keywords shouldn’t seem stuffed forcefully.
3. Use keyword variations to write subheadings
The LSIs you researched before, come into play when writing subheadings.
Keyword variations in subheadings work more effectively than any random placement.
Your on-page SEO checklist lacks perfection if you don’t utilize LSIs in subheadings.
Though you can find all the relevant variations via LSI Graph, have a look at the “Searched related” section on target search result page as well.
4. Put subheadings in H2 and H3 tags appropriately
Heading tags provide an easy-to-understand flow to your content.
Both actual people and Google bots understand the relevancy and content flow with heading tags.
So, you can’t choose them randomly.
Define all the H2 tags first on a page. Then, create H3 tags within them, if required.
This way, you won’t make any mistake.
5. Write long and comprehensive content pieces
Long comprehensive content is one of the top on-page SEO tips for 2019.
The content length post from Capsicum Media Works shows a great infographic about this.
It explains how top 10 results on Google have an average range from 2,000 to 2400+ words.
I have also explained the value of long and comprehensive content in my post- Writing long blog posts: how to write without boring your audiences.
The gist of it all is that you do need long content pieces, but compromising the quality is a big NO.
6. Add internal links to increase content value
Internal links decide the flow of traffic from one page to others.
If you want that, you need to choose value-giving pages to link internally.
There is no set formula for adding internal links. You stay on the safe side by focusing on the value of each internal link. Think like a user who would want more information regarding a particular topic.
7. Ensure high authority and relevancy of your outbound links
For the same content value reasons, you should use outbound links for page optimization.
Search engines check external links to decide what your web page is all about.
So, the content value of an outbound linked page can improve the value of your content as well.
But you can’t add too many outbound links. Try keeping it around 3-5 for every 1000 words on a page.
For an advanced on-page SEO approach, you should check the content relevancy and domain authority of pages before adding them.
Moz Link Explorer will help you find domain authority of web pages.
To keep outbound links from stealing your traffic, let those links open in a new window.
8. Use keyword variations to write anchor texts
Keyword placement related on-page SEO steps are required in linking process as well.
You should organically use keyword variations to create anchor text of links.
9. Spread keyword and LSIs throughout the content
Instead of just compressing your keywords in one section, spread them throughout the content.
Most of the work is done when you utilize keywords in subheadings and anchor texts.
After that, look at the overall keyword density when including keywords in content copy.
10. Give an interesting meta description with target keyword
In 150-160 characters, you are supposed to promote your page and optimize for Google as well.
To, do so, you need to be crisp with your words.
Provide compelling information, so more searchers click on your page.
Also, include main target keyword once without stuffing anymore.
A great trick- Type your target keyword in Google search. See the style of meta description appearing in the top 10 results.
11. Write custom page URLs with target keyword
In a recent Matt Cutts interview, he said that URLs should have 3-5 words mostly.
Long URLs look like spams, which impacts organic CTR and also reduces the response when you share them on different platforms.
So, you should avoid using your long heading as a URL.
Use your target keyword in the URL.
Utilize dashes (-) to separate the words.
Don’t add years. For example, instead of using “improve-productivity-in-2019”, use “improve-productivity-this-year”.
And, avoid using words with no search scope. (For example- to, for, info, article, tag)
So, it should all come together like this-
On-page SEO tips for images
1. Select content enhancing images
Image selection is one of the most important on-page SEO elements.
You need images that offer genuine meaning to your content.
Each image should explain something about the text written on your page.
Plus, it should offer a visual appeal, so you can promote them on social media, forums and other platforms.
2. Customize and optimize images for quality
After getting your perfect image, you need to customize it for the purpose.
Customization process can include cropping, text incorporation, visual enhancements, and additional effects.
To optimize your images, you need to focus on the file type and size.
There are three file formats popularly used- JPEG, PNG, GIF.
You can usually choose between JPEG and PNG, depending on the quality you want to achieve.
JPEG suits most SEO aspects, but PNG can help you obtain a high resolution.
This is when the size optimization comes into the picture!
You can optimize photograph images to 100-150KB.
The size of banner images can be around 60KB.
And background images can easily be optimized to 10KB or lower.
Use Tiny JPG to optimize your images in bulk.
3. Put relevant keywords in “File Names” and “ALT text”
Image file names and image URLs should match each other.
You should incorporate keyword variations in them. This way, you will get traffic from image search results as well.
File name: bed-sheet-blue-color
Image URL: https://yoursite.com/uploads/bed-sheet-blue-color.jpg
The ALT text is image information that appears when your image doesn’t load. You can add target keyword in ALT text, but ensure a descriptive nature.
ALT text: Cotton double bed sheet in blue color with floral design
